Police officer defies rain for work, becomes Internet sensation (May 2, 2016)
A police officer who directs traffic
at the Madina Zongo Junction has become a social media sensation after he
defied last Thursday’s downpour and kept the traffic moving.
Photos of the unidentified policeman
went viral on Facebook and Twitter, in celebration of a rare occurrence as
police officers abandon their duties at road intersections the moment it starts
raining.
The original pictures of the
policeman wearing his yellow reflective gear over a white shirt and black
trousers, taken by Yussuf Bouda, had been shared more than 34,000 times on
Facebook alone, as of last Friday.
Public reaction
Those who commended his dedication
to duty included David Essel Sam, who said, “If we are looking for the best
policemen in Ghana, this is one of them. I am looking forward to the
authorities rewarding people like this.”
But there are others who also said
the police officer’s action was nothing extraordinary.
“Jesus, shocking.… I think I should hand all London policemen a gold bar because over here, it is usual and normal. Don’t pamper Ghanaian policemen. It is their duty, rain or shine and they signed for it.
“What about soldiers who sleep in
the bush with guns in a war zone while on peacekeeping? A policeman stands in
the rain to direct traffic is an unheard story and he should be given Olympic
medal and Victoria Cross. Ridiculous,” Ben Bounze said.
