Man 38, nabbed over illegal water connection
THE Teshie Police have arrested a 38-year-old man for illegally connecting water to his business centre.
The suspect, Fred Ablorh, is also being held for disrupting water services to residents of Agblezah, a suburb of Teshie.
Ablorh was arrested when he was found illegally selling water to tanker owners.
The Teshie District Police Commander, DSP Samuel Tibil Punobyin, who confirmed the arrest in an interview, said the suspect was in custody pending further investigations.
He said soon after Ablorh’s arrest and the disconnection of his supply lines, water supply to Agblezah was restored.
The Head of the Loss Control Team of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL)/Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Mr Jordan Oku, told the Daily Graphic that his outfit, together with the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Water Sellers Association of Adjiriganor and Teshie, agreed on a schedule to enable members of the association to sell water on Wednesdays and Sundays.
He said contrary to the agreement, the suspect was found selling water to some tanker owners on Monday, November 2, 2009, adding that officials of AVRL/GWCL, therefore, disconnected water supply to Ablorh and asked that the suspect reported himself to AVRL/GWCL offices.
According to Mr Oku, the suspect failed to show up, only for the officials to return to the site on November 7, 2009 to find that he had by passed the meter and was selling water to tanker owners.
He said the attention of the Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku Constituency, Nii Nortey Dua, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Mr Daniel Amartey Mensah, was drawn to the situation.
He said with the assistance of two national security officers, the suspect was arrested.
Mr Amartey, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, corroborated the story and gave the assurance that the assembly would collaborate with the GWCL and the police to ruthlessly deal with any person found to have done anything to disrupt water supply to the municipality.
“We will not allow anyone to deny our people the water they deserve,” he added.
