Merchant Bank to play in the big league, Sayurday, August 28, 2010 , pg 29
THE Merchant Bank is positioning itself to become a global player in a few years to come.
In that regard, the bank is building capacity of its staff to make them more innovative and able to develop products that give it a competitive edge over its competitors.
The Manager in charge of the Merchant Bank Learning and Development Centre, Mrs Alberta Quarcoopome made the remark at a forum to introduce the Wharton University of Pennsylvania Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme to some staff of Merchant Bank.
Wharton University, one of the prestigious MBA schools in the United States offers courses including Accounting, Strategic Management, Marketing, Human Resource and Organisational Resourcefulness, Multinational Management and Business and Public Policy.
Mrs Quarcoopome said the Merchant Bank prides itself as the bank with a pool of young talented graduates and would therefore provide them with the avenue to empower themselves academically to further enrich the human resource base of the bank.
“We are committed to giving our staff the experiential opportunity so they will not only be of benefit to the bank but the entire nation.”
She said the bank would identify and explore possible avenues of collaboration with the school which would be of benefit to the bank.
Ms Tiffany Gooden, the Associate Director in-charge of admissions at the Wharton University urged the staff of the bank to see investment in education as the best means to position themselves for the global market.
“Education is key and you must strive to add that value to your lives, if you are to make any impact in your life and that of your communities”.
Ms Gooden noted that the knowledge gained from the programme would help supplement what the students of the programme got on the job.
She said “Our major task is to equip you with strategic thinking skills that has the ability to positively impact on your communities in addition to preparing you for major leadership positions at work”.
Ms Adjoa Bamfo, an MBA student at the school, who shared her experiences with the staff said the programme had been successful in helping her to build team-player credentials.
