Youth urged to renew commitment to Christ, Wednesday, September 1, 2010, pg 46

The Rt. Rev. Dr Emmanuel Komla Gbordzoe, Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, has called on the youth to renew their commitment to Christ and become agents of change to their peers, community and nation.

“Once the youth set themselves apart to serve God and made up their minds not to return to worldly pleasures, they would be free from the social vices that serve as obstacles to their growth as responsible citizens and become useful to humanity.”

The Rt. Rev. Dr Gbordzoe was preaching a sermon on the theme: “Set apart for God” to climax the 2010 Youth Camp of the Global Evangelical Church (GEC) at Anloga in the Volta Region.

The Moderator urged the youth to lead  righteous lives, and be wary of the devil “who is seeking to devour, kill and destroy” their God-given potential through sin.

“Whenever you sin, you isolate yourselves from the Lord Jesus Christ and can easily come under attack of the enemy,” he said. He advised them to be determined to allow the word of God to rule their hearts and unite them with Jesus Christ to secure their place in the Kingdom of God.

About 4,000 youth from the 13 Presbyteries of the church attended the five-day camp held on the theme: “Faithful Stewardship, the Responsibility of the Covenant Child.”

The main speaker, Rev. Samuel Dickson Dumevi, the Inter-Church Relations Secretary of the GEC, said in order to be faithful servants yielding the expected results, the youth needed to set goals, make right choices and develop their potential.

He described a faithful steward as a trustworthy person who was put in charge of resources with set laws and rules and showed consistent qualities of steadfast royalty.

Rev. Dumevi challenged the youth to be reliable, honest and unwavering in carrying every responsibility given them.

“God is watching you and expecting that the assignment he has given you is done to the best of your ability, ” he said.

“Faithfulness is a character from God, it is not a choice but an obligation,” he noted.

Rev. Dr Setri Nyomi of the Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church, a friend of the church based in Geneva, urged the youth to emulate Timothy in the Bible, whom he described as an instrument of challenge to the youth.

Rev. Nyomi, who is also the General Secretary of the World Communion of Reformed Churches, asked them to conduct themselves well in faith, love and holiness, setting examples to their peers and others in order to bring them to the Lord.

Rev. Hoenyeame Arise Agbesinyale, the Director of the Youth Ministry of the church, said the purpose of this year’s theme was “to motivate and inspire” the youth to lead a life of a difference and become better persons for the future.

“The present-day youth face many challenges hence the need to build them on a firm foundation of righteousness to enable them to shape their lives towards becoming the future leaders we all yearn for,” Rev. Agbesinyale said.

He praised the participants for their comportment and urged them to put into practice the messages they had heard to stand firm and  become faithful stewards for the Lord, their country and the world at large.
