THE Rotary Club of Achimota-Accra is constructing a three-classroom block for the inhabitants of Fiakonya near Dodowa in the Dangme West District of the Greater-Accra Region.
The project, which is estimated to cost GH¢100, 000, will also involve the construction of other facilities such as a library, a staff common room and a storeroom.
Expected to be completed by the end of this year, the building will serve more than 14 satellite communities in the area.
Funding for the project was raised through contributions from members of the club and corporate institutions.
The President of the Rotary Club Achimota , Nana Odeneho Kyeremanten, told to the Daily Graphic at the project site that the club was touched by the plight of the people in the area, especially concerning access to adequate classrooms, to undertake the project.
“They appealed to us and after coming to the area, we realised that, indeed, they were in dire need.”
He pledged the club’s commitment to improving the lives of people in the deprived community saying, “in Rotary, we place service and voluntarism above everything.”
Earlier, Odeneho Kyeremanten appealed to members of the community to help complete the project early, stressing that “even when we are not around, you can continue with the construction.”
“We do not want to do it all alone without the involvement of the community. We want you to feel that the project is yours, hence the need to be part of its completion so that at the end, you will be able to take good care of it,” he told community leaders at the project site.
The Chief of Fiakonya, Nene Narteh Agbolosu III, expressed appreciation to Rotary for the initiative and stated that the project would help reduce pressure on the existing school facility.
He pledged that the community would provide communal labour to help complete the project on time.
Other projects undertaken by the Rotary Club of Achimota-Accra include a clinic for the Samsam community near Nsawam, an ear impairment centre at the Achimota School, and a yet-to-be-started shelter for street children and victims of domestic violence.
