Chinese consortium signs MoU-— To complete new site for GIJ

THE Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), through the Ministry of Education, has signed a memorandum of understanding with a Chinese consortium to facilitate the completion of structures at the university’s new site located at Okponglo in Accra.

The project, when completed, will have modern facilities, including lecture halls, residential facilities for lecturers, audio-visual departments and a library.

The Chairman of the GIJ Governing Council, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, who made this known at the 10th matriculation ceremony of the school last Saturday, said the council was also working with the Ghana Educational Trust Fund (GETFUND) to increase financial support for the project.

The  ceremony was to matriculate 420 students out of the 1,200 students who applied for the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communication Studies, Diploma in Communication Studies and Top-up BA programmes for Diploma holders from the university.

Alhaji Fuseini was optimistic that work on the project, which has stalled for a while, would be revived before the end of the year or early next year.

In his welcoming address, Alhaji Fuseini urged the students to broaden their scope of knowledge not only to pass their examinations but also to help in deepening Ghana’s democratic process.

“You must endeavour to read and be broad minded so you can acquaint yourself with issues of national and global interest,” he added.

The Rector of the school, Mr David Newton, in an address, said the institute was reviewing its curriculum, introducing new programmes and expanding its infrastructural base in a bid to satisfy the demands of the Presidential Charter granted it last year.

The Presidential Charter mandates the school to award its own degrees, diplomas  and certificates.

According to him, “already the institute is experimenting with new courses such as Globalisation, online journalism and multimedia studies", adding that new programmes to be developed as part of the on-going curriculum review will include programmes such as Information Communication Technology (ICT), Business Management, Entrepreneurial and Leadership Skills, and languages.

Mr Newton indicated that the institute was currently collaborating with an American non-governmental organisation to implement a multi-country project which sought to improve access and the use of demographic data among researchers, media organisations, donor agencies and other users for development planning.

He indicated that the focus of the institute had been on strengthening its human resource capacity, research and documentation, improving on its ICT and infrastructural development.

He urged the students to “work hard to develop analytical minds in such a competitive environment. As students, you must obey rules and regulations and maintain strict adherence to disciplinary code and ethical values.”

The Minister of Education, Mr Alex Tettey-Enyo, in a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Education, Mr Paul Dzandu, commended the institute for making some strides in improving and strengthening learning, teaching and research since the presentation of the charter.
