Plans underway to build a third habour, Monday, February, 28, 2011, Spread

The Ministry of Transport is carrying out feasibility studies to pave way for the construction of a deep sea port.

The sector minister, Alhaji Collins Dauda, who  disclosed this at a dinner dance to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Maersk Line, added that the Tema and Takoradi ports  were to be rehabilitated and developed to enable the two ports to accommodate more ships.

Maersk Line is one of the leading liner shipping companies in the world, serving customers all over the globe. The Maersk Line fleet comprises more than 500 vessels and more than  1,900,000  twenty feet containers.

The occasion brought together, captains of the shipping community, customers and officials of the company across Africa.

Alhaji Dauda observed that in a globally interdependent world, the role of the transport sector in the carriage of vital imports and exports for  industrial and domestic use remained crucial to developing economies like Ghana.
The minister said in furtherance of the operations of the cargo shipping industry, the ministry would continue to provide a world-class frame and regulatory regime for all corporate bodies.

He commended Maersk for fostering international cargo trade in Ghana  through its web of liner services.
Mr David Skov, the Chairman of Maersk Ghana Limited and Cluster Manager for Central and West Africa, earlier in a welcome address said the company would introduce its flagship WAMFAX service in Ghana in the second quarter of 2011.

The service, which operates with vessels with a capacity for 4500 x 20 feet containers, would significantly reduce transit time from Africa to Asia.

While appreciating the company’s customers for their support especially in coming out of the worst year in shipping occasioned by the global financial crisis, Mr Skov explained that Maersk Line would continue to upgrade its services and maintain a strong commitment to developing business in Ghana and supporting the local economy.

In that regard, he said, “This investment of more than $ 2 billion in 22 vessels is a sign that we are indeed putting Africa first and are serious about development. We are proud to make a modest contribution to the fantastic development Ghana has been experiencing over the years.”

Meanwhile Maesrk Line has signed a contract with Korea’s Daewoo shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Company Limited to build 10 of the world’s largest and most efficient vessels with an option for an additional 20 vessels.
