Christians must influence society positively — Rev Dumevi, Pg 13
The Inter-Church Relations Director of the Global Evangelical Church (GEC), Rev. Samuel Dickson K. Dumevi, has urged Christians in political positions to use their status to positively influence society.
He noted that it was rather regrettable that some Christians use their positions to pursue personal interest to the detriment of the larger society.
“Today, we live in a world in which people openly abuse their office by stealing, robbing and grossly abusing others they are supposed to protect,” he observed.
Rev. Dumevi was delivering a sermonon the theme “ Leadership in this World of Conflict “ at the 2011 commissioning and ordination of pastors of the GEC in Accra.
In all, 12 pastors were ordained, while 11 were commissioned for the work of the vineyard.
According to the church’s doctrine, a married pastor qualifies for ordination after graduating from the Global Theological Seminary (GTS) and serving and pasturing a congregation for two years, while candidates for commissioning are fresh graduates of the GTS.
The Moderator of the Church, Rt Rev. Dr Emmanuel Gbordzoe, led leaders and the congregation to pray for the newly ordained and commissioned ministers.
Rev. Dumevi said “we live in a country where people are quick to defend and promote that which is totally vile and evil but attack and stand against which is good and right”.
He predicted that soon, a section of Ghanaians would advocate for legislation on homosexuality which he described as a disgusting, filthy, immoral and below animal level attitude.
“We now live in a world in which the people are being out of touch with the values, morals, integrity and virtues that build strong churches, communities, nations and people,” he said.
He urged the new pastors to allow humility to work in their ministry because “ it is humility that leads Christians to the service of God”.
“Give God the first place and He will take you places; God can accelerate you further and faster. Remember your greatest test will always come when you are tired but you can outlast the attack,” Rev. Dumevi stated.
He also encouraged them to take the Kingdom of God wherever they found themselves, saying, “The Kingdom of God is not only spiritual; it is also material and you must work to bring progress and make people conscious of their environment”.
He also urged the members of the church to support the pastors in a manner that would not distract them from the work of God.
