Nana Konadu Dares Critics - Picks Forms Today,May 3, 2011 (pg 13)
A former First Lady, , picks her nomination forms at the headquarters
of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) today to contest the party’s
flag-bearer slot for the 2012 presidential election.
After picking the forms, Nana Konadu will hit the ground with a news conference to launch her campaign at the Accra International Conference Centre tomorrow Wednesday, May 4, 2011.
For now, it is not clear the message she will present to the delegates, but signals are clear that she will use what she perceives as the shortcomings of the Mills administration to drive home her ambition.
Nana Konadu and President Mills stare history in the face, as the contest for the flagbearership, scheduled for Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region from July 8 to July 10, 2011, will be the first time a sitting president in the country is to be challenged at the end of his first term for his party’s ticket.
In the first NDC administration, the party endorsed former President John Jerry Rawlings by popular acclamation at the end of his first term in office to contest as the party’s flag bearer in the 1996 presidential election for a second term in office.
When the pendulum of political power swung from the NDC to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2000, the NPP also endorsed former President John Agyekum Kufuor by popular acclamation after his first term in office to contest as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2004 general election, and earned a second term in office.
Nana Konadu, the soul mate of the founder of the NDC, has, however, decided to torpedo that convention as she pits her strength against incumbent President Mills and takes a giant step in Ghana’s political history as the first female to contest the flagbearership of a political party.
Described in some political circles as the “Iron Lady” for her strong conviction and character, Nana Konadu will end months of speculations over her intention to contest President Mills.
Many people had expressed doubt over the idea that the versatile President of the 31st December Women’s Movement would contest President Mills, in spite of the fact that there had been simmering signals, such as the early formation of a group known as Friends of (FONKAR) and the eventual resignation of the former First Lady as the NDC’s first Vice-Chairman.
Nana Konadu’s strong conviction to wrest the NDC mantle from President Mills is explained by the Spokesperson for the Rawlingses, Mr Kofi Adams, who told the Daily Graphic that picking the nomination forms at the NDC Headquarters today would be the beginning of her journey to the Castle.
The challenge posed by Nana Konadu notwithstanding, it does present a familiar wave of opposition to President Mills, as he had faced similar flag-bearer contests in the past posed by Dr Kwesi Botchway and Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, but on both occasions the law professor managed to weather the storm.
Indications are that the contest will not be child’s play, as both candidates-to-be are making overtures to win the hearts and minds of the party faithful, as well as endear themselves to the history-making congress in Sunyani.
