The NPP evidence can't pass legal proceedings anywhere
The National Democratic Congress says the evidence gathered by the NPP for its petition to the Supreme Court cannot stand the test of any legal proceedings anywhere.
“They want to find something to hold their party together. There is no way they are going to be able to sweep the problems in their parties under the carpet,” the General Secretary of the NDC said at swift press conference in reaction to the another one held by the NPP after it filed its petition at the Supreme Court today.
Even before the Electoral Commission declared President John Mahama of the 2012 polls, the NPP raised red flags about the credibility of the polls.
According to the NPP there evidence of over-voting - when the votes in the ballot box exceed the ballots issued to voters; voting without verification, duplicated serial numbers and several other irregularities that undermined the credibility of the elections.
The party, therefore, petitioned the Supreme Court today to look into the matter in a landmark case that has a lot to strengthen the country’s democracy.
According to the NPP, while over voting alone accounted for 620,443 votes, voting without verification, recorded 456,933, and words and figures that did not match accounted for 3,841 votes.
Per the party’s figures, a total of all these irregularities amounted to 1,340,018 illegal votes.
But Mr Asiedu asserted that “The NPP has a problem convincing their followers that they had lost so they must keep on lying and for every lie you put in the public domain, they have to tell nine other lies to support that lie.”
The NPP and some civil society organisations had make a case for live broadcast of the court proceedings.
That, the NDC General Secretary said amounted to discrediting the credibility of the Supreme Court
“Since when did this happen? They are preparing the minds of their people. This so-called evidence they are talking about cannot stand a test of any proceedings anywhere.”
“They know it will be thrown out. So they are already preparing the minds of their supporters that if it is thrown out then the NDC has done something also at the Supreme Court,” he told journalists.
The NDC scribe noted that the best way out for the NPP was an introspection that to expose the problems confroting the party and then confront the problems and deal with the problems.
“Instead, they are engaged in willful blindness. There are threats in your environment, you are not prepared to confront them and deal with them but rather closing your eyes. That the problems will be swept away,” he said.
He advised the NPP to do an analysis of the cause of their defeat and work towards 2016 adding that what the NPP was doing now was feeding into an NDC victory in 2016.
