WESTERN Union (WU), a global leader in money transfer, and it agents in Ghana have presented 600 dual-sitting desks to six selected schools in the Greater Accra, Central, Ashanti and Western regions to help provide a conducive environment for learning.

The initiative which was aligned with ’Our World, Our Family’ signature programme of the Western Union Foundation, was aimed at empowering individuals, families and communities to have access to better education and economic opportunities.

It had Nkwantanan D/A 5 and 6 Primary and Junior High School (JHS) and the Zakari Kope Primary and JHS in the Greater Accra Region; Nyanfeku Ekroful Catholic JHS in the Central Region; Whindo M/A Primary School in the Western Region and; the Daatano Primary and Penyi Number 1 JHS in the Ashanti Region, each receiving 100 dual-sitting desks.

Presenting the desks, on behalf of the WU agents, at a ceremony in Accra at the weekend, Mr Ben Shamo, Head of Money Transfer at the Trust Bank said the beneficiary schools were chosen because of their dire need for desks.

According to him, it was the collective responsibility of the government and corporate institutions to make the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Education achievable in Ghana.

He observed that “the initiative will positively address key aspects of the schools’ current and future challenges” adding that WU remained committed to championing the cause of education in Ghana, as manifest in its various promotions.

The Director of Basic Education at the Ghana Education Service, Mr Stephen Adu, said the intervention was timely and came at a time; the government was putting in place measures to achieve the ‘education for all by 2015.’

He stated that the comfort of a child in a classroom was very necessary in ensuring effective teaching and learning. He said the situation where some schools in the country lacked basic infrastructure made teaching and learning unpalatable.

He, therefore, commended the efforts of WU, which he said would go a long way towards providing a conducive environment for teaching and learning in the beneficiary schools.

He urged the beneficiary schools to maintain a high culture of maintenance towards the desks and use them for the purpose for which they were donated.

Mrs Dora Agigbire, the Headmistress of the Nkwantanan D/A Primary and JHS expressed appreciation to Western Union and its agents on behalf of the beneficiary schools saying “having a comfortable learning environment ensured that students were able to concentrate on learning, which will encourage them to excel in their studies.

Western Union’s agents in Ghana include the Agricultural Development Bank, the Ecobank Ghana, The Trust Bank, Apex Bank, the National Investment Bank, Intercontinental Bank, Guranty Trust Bank, Cal Bank, Barclays Bank, Standard and Chatered Bank, Prudential Bank, Access Bank and the Unibank.
