Govt acquires 20,000 acres for mango in northern regions, Thursday, February 22, 2011, Back Page

THE government has acquired 20,000 acres of land for the cultivation of mangoes in the three northern regions.

This forms part of the National Mango Plantation Project aimed at developing mango orchards in a five-year period.

The Director of Exports at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Mr Appiah Donyina, disclosed this in Accra at a business meeting between the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) and the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry  (FICCI).

The high-powered Indian business delegation, led by the Group Chairman of DCS Limited, Mr Harpinder Singh Narula, held a round-table meeting with their Ghanaian counterparts in Accra.

The 35-member Indian delegation, comprising chief executive officers of some major Indian companies representing agriculture and food processing, transport, Information Technology, communications and mining, is in the country to explore ways of investing in the Ghanaian economy and also discuss possible ways of strengthening business ties between Ghana and India.

Mr Donyina urged the visiting businessmen to take advantage of the opportunity offered by the project, as India remained one of the biggest exporters of mango to the European Union.

He said as part of measures to ensure that Ghana’s manufacturing sector remained competitive, the Ministry of Trade had established a Tariff Advisory Board (TAB) to protect the trade sector from unfair business practices and goods imported into the country.

The President of the AGI, Nana Owusu Afari, said Ghana had a lot to learn from India, considering the pace of growth of the Indian economy over the years.

Mr Narula, for his part, said Ghana was a promising business destination endowed not only with natural resources but also a good literacy rate, a dynamic private sector, a business friendly environment and a progressive policy regime, adding that Ghana occupied an important position on India’s trade promotion programme.

He urged members of the two business organisations to use the two-day meeting as an avenue to explore mutual business opportunities in both countries.
