Taxi Driver Gives Up Armed Robbers who Chartered His Car

Two suspected armed robbers run out of luck when a taxi driver they had hired gave them up after seeing the nozzle of a gun in their bag.

Although Nii Addo Tetteh, a 34-year old trader and Nene Sakitey Asare, a 42-year old fisherman, initially managed to escape, they were arrested on August 6, 2012.

Briefing the media, the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Patrick Timbillah said the two suspects hired the the taxi driver from Somanya in the Eastern Region to Weija in the Greater Accra Region on August 5, 2012, a day after the incident.

On reaching Tema, the suspects asked the taxi driver to stop at a junction near Tema. The suspects then disappeared and returned with a woollen green bag, the content of which the taxi driver said he did not know.

They then asked the taxi driver to continue the journey to Weija, their original destination.

According to DCOP Timbilla, on reaching New Weija, the suspects asked the taxi driver to join them to have some drinks at a drinking spot, near New Vision Hotel.

While having the drinks, one of the suspects went out briefly to make calls and returned with balls of kenkey but the taxi driver excused them and went out saying he was not hungry.

According to the taxi driver while outside, he became suspicious of the body language and movement of the suspects hence he decided to slightly open the bag and saw the nozzle of a gun.

DCOP Timbilla said that heightened the taxi driver’s suspicion. He, therefore, decided to inform a passer-by about the situation.

The passer-by advised him to alert the police.

The two therefore hatched a plan that the taxi driver should tell the two suspects that the car had developed a problem while the passer-by reported the matter to the police.

He said the two suspects upon seeing the police took to their heels.

The police, therefore, took the content of the bag together with the taxi driver to the Weija Police station where upon examination, the police found an AK 47 double magazine, loaded with 48 rounds of ammunition.

In addition to that, the police found 41mm ammunition, a black khaki pair of trousers, a cap and a shirt.

The police commander said the following day, a combined team of police from Weija and the Regional Criminal Investigations Department went for an operation at Odumase-Krobo, Somanya and Agomanya where Tetteh who saw the police attempted to abscond but was shot in the leg to de-mobilise him.

DCOP Timbilla said a search on Tetteh revealed a silver-coated revolver pistol with seven bullets. Tetteh subsequently assisted the police to arrest Asare.

He said while Tetteh was currently on admission at the Police Hospital, Asare was in police custody.
