Tatoo designer jailed 30 years for robbery

The Accra Circuit Court  on Monday sentenced a tattoo designer, Kwame Asare, to 30 years imprisonment in hard labour for robbery.

The court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri convicted Asare on his own plea.

 In a plea, the accused appealed for mercy since it was the devil that influenced  him to commit the offence.

Sections 149 of the Criminal Code (Act 29, 1960) makes armed robbery, a criminal offence.

The accused pleaded guilty to the offence when he appeared before the court last week.

Facts of the case

The facts of the case, according to Police Chief Superintendent, Duuti Tuaruka, were that the complainant was a trader and lived at Teshie Tsuibleoo, a in Accra, while  the accused person also resided at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra.

He said on March 14, 2014, at about 10 pm, the complainant, who was going to church at GREDA Estate, Teshie, on reaching Teshie Fertilizer, was was suddenly attacked by the accused person who ordered her to surrender all her belongings.

He said the complainant, who then was helpless as, all efforts to run away from the accused person failed, had began to cry for help, but the accused person over powered her and violently snatched her hand bag, valued at GH¢ 20.00.

The prosecution said the accused person also took away a mobile phone valued at GH¢ 100.00; two yards of cloth valued GH¢ 20.00 and cash of GH¢39.00 before bolting away.

“But the accused person, who was not lucky, was arrested by passers-by and the items retrieved and later handed over to the police for investigation,” he added.

The prosecutor said investigations revealed that accused person normally hid himself at that particular spot, especially, during light off periods, to terrorise, people around.

He said after investigations, the accused was charged with the offence and put before the court.
