Gebrselassie to launch marathon (Monday, March 9, 2015)pg 79

Barring any last minute hitch the international legendary marathon runner, Haile Gebrselassie will arrive in Ghana today for the launch of the maiden Millennium Marathon.

"The smiling assassin" – as he was once famously christened is not in for a race on the tracks but as the race director for the marathon in Accra.

According to  Chief Executive Officer of Millennium Marathon Sports Company,  Ashim Morton   the celebrated athlete was selected as the race director because he was a symbol of the world’s finest and best marathon runners.

“He will give us the best expertise for an international marathon that can be compared to the Boston Marathon. He brings on board the international standards of global marathon organisation,” he said in an interview.

Scheduled for September 6, 2015, the Millenium Marathon, Mr.Morton said would be a global accredited run and would enter the international marathon calendar.

The marathon under the auspices Millennium Marathon Sports Company in collaboration with the Haile Gebrselassie Foundation with support from the Government of Ghana is expected to attract over 15,000 professional runners locally and internationally, as well as more than 100,000 spectators from around the country.

On the economic benefits, Mr Morton said the Millennium Marathon will have immediate and positive economic benefits for the local economy and businesses whilst showcasing Accra, Ghana to the rest of the world.

“Our mission is to create an annual world class sports and tourist event alongside a fun
and health event for Ghana, which will bring family and community together while
raising money for charity,” he said.
